Monitoring employee website visits and internet activity

Tracking user internet activity is another great way to understand how effectively employees are working. OctoWatch gathers information about open webpages in all popular browsers, organizes it, and analyzes the results.

Features:

  • Each new URL is added to the list of visited webpages and supplemented with a screenshot.
  • In the activity view window ("Daily View"), you will see not only a screenshot, the page URL, and the browser window title, but also related information - keystrokes, clipboard content, information about printed documents, etc.
  • To gather information about visited websites, the browser history is not used. The employee cannot delete it.
  • OctoWatch intercepts traffic directly on the computer or terminal server (agent type), and the system can be used even in peer-to-peer networks, with internet access through a router and without a server.
  • You can generate reports that show the "favorite" websites of employees and departments, comparing time spent on web surfing by day, month, year, etc.
  • The default set of rules includes a rule that will notify you of situations when an employee spends more than 30 minutes a day on social networks. Similar notifications/blocking can be set for attempts to access suspicious or prohibited websites, including by keywords.
  • With the built-in traffic filter, you can block access to websites. You can set full blocking for a specific user or group of users, establish a time interval during which the site cannot be accessed, or limit the maximum time spent on the site.
  • The "Global Search" feature helps find all visits to a specific website over a selected period.
  • If an employee uses an anonymous browser, they most likely have something to hide. OctoWatch is excellent at detecting such cases.

Why it’s necessary to monitor employees’ website visits

Work efficiency largely depends on how immersed a person is in their work. The practice of domestic companies shows that employees often get distracted by "time-killer" websites, which truly "steal" work time.

Statistical observations allow us to point out the most popular "killers":

About 47% of employees use Yandex services - personal email, maps, Yandex.Market, but spend significantly less time there - an average of 35 minutes
The largest social network in the Russian internet is visited during working hours by 42% of employees, spending an average of 84 minutes. In the overwhelming majority of cases, this is unproductive time, except when goods or services are sold through VK.
The social network "My World" and entertainment services by Mail.ru Group are accessed by 36% of respondents, but on average they spend just over half an hour - 32 minutes;
The popular social network among the older generation is visited by only 19% of respondents, but they spend as much time there as their colleagues on "My World" - 31 minutes;
The popular video resource YouTube and the news network RBC are also widely used. The latter is visited by about 11% of employees, who spend an average of 46 minutes daily reading articles and watching videos.

That is why it is crucial to eliminate the possibility of unproductive time wastage, for which monitoring internet activity with OctoWatch is ideally suited.

At the same time, it would also be reasonable to give employees the option to spend up to 3-5% of their working time collectively on such sites - a kind of "carrot" that increases loyalty to the company. The settings of OctoWatch allow granting access for a limited time.
