Why it is important to control employees' activity in social networks
The use of social networks in the workplace carries a number of negative consequences that a manager should track and eliminate:
- Waste of working time: statistics show that each employee spends between 30 to 120 minutes of work time on social networks each day.
- Industrial espionage is prevalent in today’s world, and thanks to technological advancements, the tasks of collecting sensitive information have become significantly easier: employees often do not realize how easy it is to "leak" information just by posting another message on a social network. This includes not only the publication of financial data (reports, statistics, salary levels) but even simple photographs of offices. There is a known case where a photo of British Prince William in a military unit surfaced in the media, with a sheet of paper containing an employee’s login and password visible on the computer screen in the background.
- Another reason to control employees’ activity in social networks is the overall reputation of the company they work for. For example, employees often discuss the company or management in private correspondence.
- Social networks allow for the publication and distribution of illegal content, primarily videos, music, and photographs. All of this is part of intellectual property, and gradually in domestic realities, responsibility for the illegal distribution of such content is increasing.
- The practices of successful companies indicate that social networks can have not only a destructive impact on employees but also give them a certain degree of freedom and rest. The key is to manage the time of work and rest wisely, and, of course, not to forget about control.
