Employee Monitoring in Construction and Design Enterprises

The construction and design sector is a vast industry within the national economy. It is no coincidence that economists believe that construction reflects the state of the economy. In Moscow alone, as of 2019, there were 600,000 people employed in the construction sector. On a national scale, this number is even more impressive, approaching 3 million people. As of 2019, the most in-demand profession is builder.

According to research conducted by specialists from OctoWatch, in 2021, up to 30% of construction companies experienced information leakage issues. In 45% of cases, the leaked information was about clients and financial performance, while in 15% it was technical information. The key tasks of the DLP system in this case are:

  • Accounting: monitoring the confidentiality of financial reporting and internal accounting.
  • Sales Department: protecting client information and detecting collusion.
  • Design Department: safeguarding technical information and identifying cases of fraud.
  • HR Department: monitoring labor productivity.
  • Procurement Department: detecting collusion and corruption.
  • Warehouse, Logistics: identifying theft (e.g., export based on false documents).

Implementation History: Construction Company

In 2020, the head of the information security service of a large construction company (name withheld as per agreement) approached us. His goal was to uncover evidence of theft within the company by the deputy general director for financial issues.

To collect evidence, it was crucial to maintain maximum confidentiality, so payment and all technical means were carried out unofficially (as agreed with the company's upper management).

As a result of total monitoring of the working computer's activity with the DLP system OctoWatch, facts of correspondence with an unidentified third party were revealed, to whom information about the costs of packages submitted for tenders was sent. Subsequently, the phone number of this contact was also discovered thanks to the functionality for regularly capturing screenshots.

It was clear that the deputy general director for financial issues was fired from the company. No information is available regarding any additional measures taken against him.
