The Grabber is Windows-only. How you treat faculty and research roles is a policy decision. Many institutions run fuller activity monitoring for admin staff and keep teaching devices on a narrower DLP-focused profile, or leave teaching activity out of scope. Academic freedom and bargaining agreements belong with your counsel. Profiles let you enforce those choices per user or group.

FERPA and student records on staff PCs
FERPA protects education records. Buying monitoring software does not make an institution “FERPA certified.” The practical issue is simpler: registrar, financial aid, and advising staff spend their day in systems that show student PII. Screenshots, Live view, and channel logs from those PCs can capture what was on screen.
Treat that captured data as carefully as the SIS itself. Decide who can open the Web Console, how long you keep records, and what your acceptable use policy says. Is OctoWatch for students or staff?
Staff and other users on institution-managed Windows endpoints. It is not student classroom management software.
Admin staff vs faculty?
Most programs start with administrative and support roles. Faculty and research monitoring is a policy choice. Some institutions use DLP-only profiles on managed teaching devices, or leave teaching activity out of scope. Profiles let you set that per group.
Does this make us FERPA compliant?
No product certifies FERPA compliance. OctoWatch helps you monitor and protect staff endpoints that handle education records through Rules, Risks, console access controls, and an On-Premise option. Your counsel owns the compliance program.
Do you support Chromebooks or Mac?
No. The Grabber runs on Windows PCs and Windows Terminal Server / RDS. We do not support Mac, Linux, Android, or Chromebook.
What about personal or BYOD devices?
OctoWatch is built for employer-managed Windows endpoints. Keep personal phones and home PCs out of scope unless counsel designs a separate, narrow program.
Can we cover multiple buildings or campuses?
Yes. Grabbers report to one Web Console. Use reports and Risks to compare sites, and organize users and groups to match your org chart.
What about written notice or union rules?
Follow your AUP, local employment rules, and any bargaining agreement. OctoWatch can show a monitoring warning and limit capture with Timetable and Settings profiles. Ask counsel before you roll out. This FAQ is not legal advice.
Cloud or On-Premise for a district?

What about shared computer labs?

Profile and Rule changes typically reach Grabbers in about five minutes. Plan investigations and blocks with that window in mind.
Can we limit who sees console data?
Yes. Operators are not licensed per seat. Use Profiles & Access so only authorized staff can see registrar or financial aid activity.
